The Parable of the Householder

Matthew 13:51-54

Jesus gives His disciples another parable that was directed to them specifically.  He gave this parable in such a manner that it not only encouraged them but also offered them a challenge.  Jesus prefaced this parable with a question to ensure that they had understood his teachings about the kingdom of heaven.  Upon their affirmation that they had comprehended the meaning of Christ’s teaching; it was followed by another parable.    The use of the word householder in this parable was intended to denote a certain status.  The word householder is a reference to one who is master of his house.  The householder is distinguished from a resident, guest or servant of a house.  Christ was stating in this parable that those who understand the kingdom of heaven has a certain spiritual status that sets him apart and above those without this knowledge.  Christ went on to say that this knowledge would necessarily cause them to “bring out” his treasures (wisdom) and distribute them accordingly.  It is the same wisdom that the Apostle Paul encouraged Timothy to pursue  so that he could “rightly  divide the word of truth”,  II Timothy 2:15.  What Jesus referenced specifically was that those instructed in the wisdom of the kingdom of heaven would know God’s desire for men to live holy as expressed in the “old” testament period and God’s means of achieving this goal through Christ in this “new” testament period.  The word “therefore” in this parable conveys that the sharing of wisdom comes automatically from knowing the wisdom of the kingdom of heaven.
